Biography

Dr Adom's academic background in management, entrepreneurship, finance, marketing and planning provides him with a comprehensive approach to business teaching, research and practice. His educational experience includes studying at top institutions in the UK and Ghana, which has provided him with skills in strategic planning, financial management, entrepreneurial innovation and marketing. His professional experience has allowed him to work on three continents: Africa, Europe, and North America.

As a researcher and business strategist, he connects theoretical knowledge with practical application through his broad academic experience to help organizations grow, and entrepreneurs succeed. As an academic, consultant and corporate leader, he uses analytical rigour and innovative thinking to solve complex business challenges. He sees University teaching as a privileged position that he treasures with a deep sense of modesty and respect for all his students, colleagues, and staff. He encourages students to check with original and paradigmatic texts whenever necessary. In this way, he seeks a sustainable balance between students' competence in lecture notes and textbook materials on the one hand and on-the-spot creativity, initiative, and critical thinking on the other.

In 2024, he won the Excellence in Scholarship Award at Burman University. At the 2025 Academy of African Business & Development Conference in Johannesburg, SA, his paper (Adom, K., & Ackom, B. (2024). Towards a greater understanding of the prevalence of immigrant entrepreneurship in the informal economy of Ghana: An institutional theory perspective. Journal of African Business, 25(2), 264-286.) was adjudged the third best paper by Taylor & Francis, Vol. 25 issue 2.

Current Research or Professional Activities

Research Statement

His research interests draw on experiences from Africa, specifically Ghana, to inform theoretical developments in entrepreneurship dynamics, motives of Micro, Small and Medium-sized enterprise owners, the relationship between formal and the informal economy, social entrepreneurship, gender and cultural issues in entrepreneurship, environmental factors, and socioeconomic development. Currently looking at immigrant entrepreneurship in both Ghana and Canada. These interests lie in the union of various disciplines, including anthropology, business/management, economics, development planning, philosophy, and sociology. He situates his work in Africa because the continent offers exciting prospects for theory development, especially in the informal economy entrepreneurship research and other thematic areas highlighted. The continent's economic conditions, colonial history, traditional beliefs, and late embrace of capitalist ideologies suggest that the texture of entrepreneurship in Africa would be distinctive from what pertains to the West. Therefore, the African context allows the opportunity to develop new theories and challenge some of the existing ones. He has carried out several research projects on entrepreneurship in Ghana in this context. He hopes to challenge some of the taken-for-granted theoretical perspectives regarding informal work and the motives of entrepreneurs in Africa and the developing world. His current research is on immigrant entrepreneurship and accumulation by dispossession theory in Ghana. Also, how religious rituals impact female entrepreneurs' performance in Ghana.
